Walking the Talk: Is Your Firm Living Its Values… or Just Selling Them?
Most firms can point to a values statement. Fewer can tell you the last time leadership actually sat down and asked whether it’s still true — or whether it ever was.
Between early-close Fridays, meetings al fresco, and an overall generous allowance for a more relaxed schedule, we take summer seriously around here. This June through August had other plans for us, too: a national conference (where we hosted a party for our network and their families); fly-ins to our partner firms; a network-practice merger; several strategic offsites; and a two-day golf tournament. All of that on top of our actual day jobs, with fall looking just as busy.
We’re not humble bragging when we say some of it was—well—exhausting. It ate up time and resources our lean and mean team doesn’t have a surplus of. And we’d do it again in a heartbeat because that’s who we are, not just what we say we are.
Building Authentic Relationships That Redefine Possible
A strong brand aligns external identity with internal reality. For us, that reality comes down to six words: building authentic relationships that redefine possible. It’s what our people do best. And because values are the foundation of both brand and culture, we intentionally identified four that guide everything we do:
- Advisor-Obsessed Going above and beyond, with unreasonable hospitality
- All-In Showing up with commitment, curiosity, and collaborative spirit— eager to contribute and relentless about results.
- Genuine + Authentic Seeking to understand, acting with positive intent, and showing up as our true selves so others are comfortable to do the same.
- Resilient + Responsive A willingness to embrace change as a constant—and an opportunity. We pivot quickly, learn continuously, and grow stronger
Living the Alignment…and Why It Matters
Cultural and brand alignment isn’t a one-time initiative. We didn’t set our values once and forget them. Five years in and we continue to check our work, revisiting them every quarter and asking ourselves the harder questions: Are they showing up in the decisions we make? Are they showing up in our employees? Are they visible in the client experience? Where are the gaps, and what’s the cost of leaving them unaddressed?
Most firms can point to a values statement. Fewer can tell you the last time leadership actually sat down and asked whether it’s still true — or whether it ever was. If you’re an advisor at one of them, you already know the gap we’re talking about: the mission statement in the onboarding deck that nobody’s mentioned since, the “culture” that shows up in the client-facing brochure but not in how you’re actually treated, the leadership meeting you weren’t in the room for because it wasn’t really about you.
Our regular reflection is what keeps our promised experience honest. Pulling off this packed summer is proof of that.
Our values came alive in making sure that a rebranded practice had a space that matched its new vibe, right down to the wallpaper. It showed up in the appreciative words of our strategic partners after each visit. We felt them energize us through each challenge and sticky conversation we took on. Every road trip, visit, meeting, and gathering was in service to them, and, ultimately, to our employees and partners. Because when your culture and your brand tell the same story, people don’t just hear your message. They believe it.
